Renshaw Radio Mfg Co Liverpool
Renshaw Radio Mfg Co              Liverpool

It all started in Renshaw Street

In 1922 my father started this business in Renshaw Street selling radio components, crystal radio sets,  one and two valve radio receivers and batteries both wet and dry types.

In 1937 a move was made to bigger premises in St Anne Street as the business expanded its product range

.During the Second World War the business kept going selling radio, batteries, electrical goods and bicycles by Hercules. The sale and charging of the wet accumulator batteries helped to keep everyones radio going through the difficult times.

For the Queens Coronation in 1953 I can remember we had a 7" black and white TV at home and many of the neighbours came round to watch this historical event.

In the late 50's I can remember 'going to work' with my father on saturday mornings and in the school holidays, going out in the firms Bedford CF van helping the driver with the deliverys.

The first record player we had at home was a mono record  player by Dansette then up graded to a stereo player by Fidelity,The radios we had over the years were mains untill Ever Ready produced the Sky Queen portable valve radio. The first TV's we had were 7" and 12" black and white.

In the late 50's early 60's the first recorders were reel to reel by the likes of Truvox ,Alba and Elizabethan.

With the arrival of the'Transistor'made radio and now the cassette recorder player with C60 C90 C120 tapes, some with a radio combined, truely portable.

In 1964 Radio Caroline arrived playing pop music gave a big boost to radio sales. The main pop music station before this was Radio Luxembourg which could only be heard in the late hours with poor reception. We sold a 2 band all transistor radio called CAROLINE in big numbers.

In 1968 due to the start of the redevelopment of the inner Liverpool City centre the business moved again to bigger premises in St James Street........to be continued.........
